An encounter with a feather leads to unexpected problem solving…

Our lunch room supervisor surprised us yet again with a beautiful gift.  She brought us some turkey feathers that she found on the ground at a local fall fair.  Thank you so much for thinking of your Kindergarten friends Miss Laurene!

A.H. loves feathers so it wasn’t surprising to find her in the Art Studio drawing a representation of her favourite feather that she named “Stripey”.

A.H. measured her feather.

She realized that the paper was too short and asked for a longer one.

She realized that the paper was too short and asked for a longer one.

After receiving the longer paper, A.H. began to think about colour.  She had her black and white pencil crayons ready to go but realized very quickly that her white crayon would not be seen on the white paper.  We challenged her to think about another colour that would be similar and still be seen on white paper.  She chose a light skin colour and still used her white pencil crayon over top!  After she completed her beautiful representation, she was left thinking about what would have to change in order to see the white pencil crayon.  She said “the colour of the paper”!

She asked for yellow paper….this is the end result…

A.H. thrilled to see her white pencil crayon on the paper!

“Stripey Feather”

A fantastic example of a child working through a process while overcoming problems and challenges along the way!
